The GOLDEN BEAR responded to the Coast Guard’s request for assistance while transiting to San Francisco. It appears the ship did an amazing job of hoisting the disabled vessel aboard the training ship, saving the boat from possible loss and rescuing the two fisherman who seemed alarmingly far from shore in such a small craft. More photos of the rescue can be found at the link above.

The T/S GOLDEN BEAR is the former USNS Maury, which served as an oceanographic research vessel for the Navy, surveying the ocean floor.
