Last Liberty Ship departs James River

ARTHUR M. HUDDELL

The last Liberty Ship in the National Defense Reserve Fleet, the ARTHUR M. HUDDELL has left the James River Reserve Fleet and looks to be bound for Greece.  The HUDDELL is being towed to the W3 Marine facility in Norfolk, where preparations will be made to transfer her to Greece where it will be transformed into a museum.  Why Greece?  After the war, a number of U.S. Liberty Ships were transferred to Greece as their merchant fleet was decimated.  The HUDDELL was stored briefly in San Francisco after the war, but was later used to lay cable for AT&T during the 50s and ’60s.  The HUDDELL was retired in 1984, and placed in the Reserve Fleet where it has stayed ever since.
