The Australian submarine HMAS WALLER fired a super torpedo, the MK 48 into the decommissioned USS FLETCHER DD-992 as part of RIMPAC 2008, a joint Naval exercise off the coast of Hawaii. Check out the video of the explosion and resulting sinking. Apparently the MK 48 torpedo is now the world’s deadliest torpedo, and was recently developed through a joint U.S./Australian effort. I found this chart that compares the size of the new torpedo to older torpedo models. I wonder how the U.S. Navy will fit the new torpedo into current submarine torpedo tubes?
